Exploiting Packing Components in General-Purpose Integer Programming Solvers
نویسنده
چکیده
The problem of packing boxes into a large box is often a part of a larger problem. For example in furniture supply chain applications, one needs to decide what trucks to use to transport furniture between production sites and distribution centers and stores, such that the furniture fits inside. Such problems are often formulated and sometimes solved using generalpurpose integer programming solvers. This chapter studies the problem of identifying a compact formulation of the multi-dimensional packing component in a general instance of integer linear programming, reformulating it using the discretisation of Allen–Burke–Mareček, and and solving the extended reformulation. Results on instances of up to 10000000 boxes are reported.

Exploiting Structure in Integer Programs
ii The Abstract This dissertation argues the case for exploiting certain structures in integer linear programs. Integer linear programming is a well-known optimisation problem, which seeks the optimum of a linear function of variables, whose values are required to be integral as well as to satisfy certain linear equalities and inequalities. The state of the art in solvers for this problem is th...
متن کاملA cutting plane method for solving KYP-SDPs
Semidefinite programs originating from the Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov lemma are convex optimization problems and there exist polynomial time algorithms that solve them. However, the number of variables is often very large making the computational time extremely long. Algorithms more efficient than general purpose solvers are thus needed. To this end structure exploiting algorithms has been propose...
متن کاملA space-indexed formulation of packing boxes into a larger box
The problem of packing many small boxes into a single larger box underlies a number of cutting, packing, scheduling, and transportation applications. There are a number of heuristic solvers, but the progress in exact solvers, in general, and integer programming solvers, in particular, has been limited. Padberg [Math. Methods Oper. Res., 52(1):1–21, 2000] estimated the integer linear programming...

In the university timetabling problem, necessity of considering variables corresponding to lessons, teachers, classes, days of the week and hours bring about a large scale mix integer linear programming problem. Usually the problem is so big that the exact mathematical programming solvers can not solve them in a small period of time. So variety of heuristic algorithms is proposed to solve such...
متن کاملA Parallelizable Acceleration Framework for Packing Linear Programs
This paper presents an acceleration framework for packing linear programming problems where the amount of data available is limited, i.e., where the number of constraints m is small compared to the variable dimension n. The framework can be used as a black box to speed up linear programming solvers dramatically, by two orders of magnitude in our experiments. We present worst-case guarantees on ...
